During & After Your Event
During Event: Expect the unexpected, things will happen and may go wrong but one of the most important things to remember is that your help and attendees are all watching. Stay calm and collected, don't let them know things have happened, act like everything is under control. It's a good practice to make notes during the day of the things that seemed to work well, and things that could be improved upon. Running successful events doesn't just happen, it's all about the planning, design, preparation, execution and learning what things you can control to make the event better than the last event.
As the event host be visible, go out in the event area and talk to people attending, canvas their ideas on what you could do to make their experience better, see what they like the most about your event. While you are walking around the event area pay attention and make notes on items that need to be tweaked for your next event. For example, food vendors, are they close by or do attendees have to walk aways to get to them. Older attendees may have trouble walking too far so next time you may want to see about positioning food vendors closer to the attendees.
After Event: Directly after your event ends, talk to your help and see how they believe the event went. See if they have thoughts or suggestions for the next event. This doesn't mean they are right about what they think, just more data to consider for the next time.
Now that the event is over, take a couple days to think about all the different things you observed and take any comments into consideration. Reflect back on the notes you jotted down during the event, make a note alongside it if you have already determined a change you would like to make for next time.
Most of this is all commonsense information, but a good practice to follow anyway.
